Season of Discovery Class Rankings - From Best to Worst

While SoD has the same classes as vanilla WoW did, many of them are completely different in their gameplay thanks to the new addition to the game – Runes. Runes can introduce classes to completely new specializations, and change their old ones to something completely different.

In this guide, we will take a look at all of the classes in Season of Discovery, rank them from best to worst, and provide a list of pros and cons for each class. You can use this information to make a more informed decision about which class you should play as in the first phase of Season of Discovery.

Season of Discovery Class Tier List

  • S tier: Classes in this tier are the best at what they do and offer flexibility or advantages that no other class can offer, which makes them unique.
  • A tier: Not as flexible or good at what they do as the S tier, but not too far behind. Still offer unique playstyles or advantages that can’t be found elsewhere.
  • B tier: Decent classes that are not optimal in all types of gameplay.
  • C tier: Generally underperforming classes in this tier. You should consider rolling something else.

Season of Discovery: Pros and Cons of All Classes

Now that we have established the basics of Season of Discovery class rankings, we will dive deeper into specifics, and explain our reasoning behind the tiers.

Hunter

Hunters are ridiculously overpowered in Season of Discovery, even after numerous adjustments and nerfs they still remain the king of this version of the game. They are good at everything, including solo content, PvP, dungeons, and raids. If you can name an activity – the hunter is probably exceptionally good at it. Here are the pros and cons.

Pros

Cons

  • Amazing damage output.
  • Easy to complete open-world content thanks to the pet.
  • Extremely powerful in PvP.
  • Great runes that enhance the gameplay even further.
  • Some pets are much better than others, leaving hunters no choice but to use them.
  • Keeps getting nerfed to this day.
  • Runes don’t change the playstyle fundamentally.

Priest

While the DPS spec for this class is lackluster and requires buffs, it is undeniable that Priests are the best healers in the entire game. New runes add even more fun to healing gameplay, and you will easily find a raid spot at any time as a priest healer as well. Here are the pros and cons.

Pros

Cons

  • Amazing healing output.
  • Easy to level up.
  • Fun runes and playstyle in SoD.
  • Straight up bad DPS spec.
  • Shadow Priests won’t be competitive in this phase.

Paladin

Paladins are by far the best tanks in Season of Discovery phase one. However, other specs are not too far behind. You can be an amazing healer or a decent DPS player too! On top of that, runes make rotation more varied and fun. Overall, if you are looking for a class that can play all specs Paladin is the one you are looking for. Woohoo! Pros

Cons

  • Amazing tanking potential.
  • Great healer.
  • Fun runes spicing up the gameplay.
  • Not as good as DPS as other specs.
  • Rotation is still slow, even with runes.

Warlock

As usual, warlocks bring a ton of utility to any group setting, be it PvE or PvP environment. Season of Discovery also adds a tank spec for warlocks, meaning that they can be more than just DPS. However, this class is fairly complex in comparison to many others, so it is another thing to consider.

Pros

Cons

  • Unparalleled utility.
  • Great DPS and ability to tank in SoD.
  • Great for solo leveling.
  • Tank rune is locked behind endgame content.
  • Affliction spec isn’t that great.
  • Difficult to play for newer players.

Druid

Druid is a great jack of all trades. While healing as a druid might not be as effective as a paladin or a priest, it is still a great option for those who are seeking this option. DPS might also fall short of, let’s say, a hunter, but not too much, it is still adequate. Same thing with tanking. While that might not sound impressive, running a druid is actually a lot of fun for players who seek this type of class fantasy.

Pros

Cons

  • Tanking and PvP specs are decent in both PvP and PvE.
  • Various utility abilities.
  • Difficult rotations for newer players.
  • Not-so-great healing spec.

Rogue

Amazing DPS even at level 25 in PvE, but lacks some key PvP abilities this early on in the game. Rogues can even somewhat tank with a new rune. Much like warriors, rogues can suffer early on, but by level 25 they should be sufficient and fun to play.

Pros

Cons

  • Possible to tank in SoD.
  • Fun and fast-paced playstyle.
  • Amazing DPS.
  • Difficult rotations for newer players.
  • Not-so-great in phase one PvP.
  • Tank rune is a chore to obtain.

Shaman

Much like druids, shamans are jacks of all trades, being decent at all three (yes, three!) specs, but not being particularly fantastic in any of them. However, this does not mean that they are bad, or underperforming by any means.

Pros

Cons

  • Can tank in Season of Discovery.
  • Decent healing potential.
  • Not excelling in any particular role.

Warrior

Warriors are amazing in group scenarios such as raiding or running dungeons, but on their own, they are pretty weak and don’t hold up to most other classes in the game. With just how much time players are spending on open-world content in Season of Discovery, this fact becomes hugely detrimental to anyone who is aiming to level up a warrior in phase one.

Pros

Cons

  • Amazing for group content.
  • Decent damage.
  • Fun runes.
  • Difficult to level up.
  • Boring rotation.
  • Most important skills are absent in phase one.

Mage

While they have good utility and can also heal now, mages are underperforming in Season of Discovery’s first phase. Since mages are locked to level 25 in phase 1, they don’t have the entirety of their toolkit yet. There’s no ice barrier or ice block yet, no cold snap either. Everything that makes mages a great class is simply absent at such a low level.

Pros

Cons

  • Easy to level up.
  • Decent damage.
  • Can heal in SoD.
  • Lacks the most iconic spells in phase one.
  • Lackluster without aforementioned spells.
