Affliction Warlock Hellcaller Hero Talents

Hellcaller emerges as the latest fusion of Affliction-Destruction Hero Talents in The War Within. While these talents are shared across both specializations, Hellcaller distinctly echoes Affliction and may prove formidable in appropriate contexts. Wither excels at encapsulating the essence of Affliction, augmented with additional flair through abilities like Bleakheart Tactics and Malevolence, which we shall delve into further.

Core Ability: Wither

As previously noted, Wither is the foundation upon which the Hellcaller Hero Talent tree for Affliction is constructed. Wither supplants Corruption (although its base form is strikingly similar to Corruption), but the ability is further enhanced through various other hero talents such as Blackened Soul and Bleakheart Tactics. These effects enable Wither to accumulate "stacks," which, upon reaching 8 stacks or when an enemy's health falls to 20%, become acute, inflicting Shadowflame damage per second for each Wither stack. Developers has not yet detailed the exact mechanics of Wither stacks or whether additional stacks increase Wither's DOT damage. However, they have clarified that the interaction of Seed of Corruption with Wither will indeed apply Wither to all affected enemies. This fundamentally implies that Wither will operate akin to Corruption when deployed through Seed of Corruption. However, meticulously managing Wither's stack count and acute phases will undoubtedly introduce an added layer of complexity to the ability.

Xalan's Ferocity

Xalan's Ferocity offers a straightforward 5% boost to your Shadow and Fire spells. While it might seem plain, this talent can be adjusted to enhance Hellcaller if the skill tree needs improvements. It could also serve as a temporary spot for new abilities during Alpha or Beta testing.

Blackened Soul

Blackened Soul significantly improves Wither. This ability ensures that your damaging skills further corrupt enemies affected by Wither, increasing its stack count by one. Importantly, the description doesn't mention "chance," suggesting that every damage-based skill will add an extra stack to Wither. It's likely that DOT (Damage Over Time) effects might be limited or have some internal cooldown, but this means you'll be stacking Wither quickly. Currently, we don't know if additional stacks of Wither increase its damage before becoming Acute, but it's assumed they do not.

Additionally, Blackened Soul notes that Wither becomes Acute when it reaches eight stacks or when the enemy's health drops to 20% or lower. This gives Wither a minor execute-like ability, adding extra burst damage when it hits eight stacks. It's unclear if Acute stacks will create a separate damage event or if it will remain the same Wither effect, but it's likely that Wither will not disappear when it becomes Acute. Instead, it will stay active with zero stacks, ready to start stacking again.

Xalan's Cruelty

Xalan's Cruelty likely serves as another "tuning knob," similar to Xalan's Ferocity, that can be used to adjust Hellcaller's performance based on overall gameplay balance. It's a bit unusual to see two flat percentage increase nodes this early in a Hero Talent tree, so it's possible that one of these might be a placeholder for a different Hero Talent that will be introduced later on.

Choice node: Hatefury Rituals VS Bleakheart Tactics

The choice between Hatefury Rituals and Bleakheart Tactics will likely hinge on tuning and the potential interactions between Hatefury Rituals and Absolute Corruption. Wither is an 18-second DoT, but this is reduced to a mere 9 seconds if Hatefury Rituals is chosen over Bleakheart Tactics. Having to refresh a DoT roughly every 8 seconds seems both punishing and tedious, which is something that should potentially be addressed in further tuning passes. One possible solution could be to have Wither deal damage 50% less often while maintaining the same duration, thereby reducing the frustration without impacting gameplay negatively.

There is also the unknown interaction between Absolute Corruption and Wither. It is unclear whether Absolute Corruption will make the effect permanent or simply have no interaction at all. Additionally, Absolute Corruption shares a talent node with Siphon Life, which is generally the better option in most settings. Therefore, we need to see if any changes have been made to the spec tree before diving too deeply into this interaction.

Bleakheart Tactics also increases the damage of Wither, but only by 15%. However, you have a chance to generate an additional stack of Wither from Blackened Soul whenever a stack is applied. It is important to note that the Blackened Soul tooltip currently implies that damage-based effects will apply a stack 100% of the time, not as a chance. This can lead to generating stacks of Wither very quickly, albeit with a slight element of RNG involved. Additionally, you would not have to deal with managing a 9-second Wither on targets, which is a significant quality of life improvement.

Mark of Xavius

Mark of Xavius is an interesting talent. It increases the damage of your Agony by 10%, and makes it a "combo" skill. If you recast Agony within 2 seconds, it will apply Agony to one other nearby enemy. Essentially, this gives you 3 Agony casts for the price of 2. While this sounds beneficial, especially for managing multiple targets in Mythic+ or AOE scenarios, it might not be as powerful as it seems. It saves you a cast when manually refreshing Agony on 5+ targets, but it doesn't fundamentally change the mechanics of handling multiple DoTs.

A more impactful change might be reducing the cooldown of Vile Taint, allowing it to be used more frequently to apply and maintain Agony across multiple enemies. This would be a significant quality of life improvement, especially in M+/AOE settings, as it would reduce the need to manually refresh Agony between Vile Taint casts. With Mark of Xavius, you still have to manage multiple effects for Affliction to be effective, but a shorter cooldown on Vile Taint would streamline this process and make the gameplay feel less cumbersome.

Cull The Weak

It's important to note that Cull The Weak requires you to either refresh Wither directly (via a manual reapplication) or refresh it with less than 4 seconds remaining to generate the 3 stacks of Wither. This is relatively easy to manage in single target settings, as it's similar to the Pandemic mechanic. However, in AOE scenarios where you are frequently casting Seed of Corruption, it’s unlikely that you will generate much value from Cull The Weak, except perhaps later in the AOE cycle to refresh your Withers.

Additionally, Wither becomes Acute at 8 stacks or when the target has 20% health remaining, so the ability to generate 3 stacks instantly could be quite powerful in certain scenarios, depending on tuning. This mechanic could significantly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of your damage over time, especially in critical moments of a fight.

Mark of Peroth'arn

Mark of Peroth'arn builds upon Wither even more, increasing the damage of Blackened Soul by 5% per stack of Wither. Additionally, it causes Agony to deal damage 10% faster, which should result in slightly increased shard generation on average. This effect is similar to Creeping Death, a talent chosen in almost every scenario.

The ideal outcome is for this talent to cause Agony to deal its damage 10% more often while maintaining the same baseline duration. This mirrors how Creeping Death functions after its changes. If Mark of Peroth'arn works this way, it would enhance Agony's efficiency and effectiveness without shortening its overall duration, making it a valuable addition to your talent build.

Malevolence

Malevolence is Hellcaller's Capstone Talent and can be seen as a "baby" version of Dark Soul: Misery. While it only grants 10% Haste, it has a 1-minute cooldown. This ability also increases your Wither stack count by 3 on all affected targets and turns them Acute. Additionally, it causes your Malefic Rapture to apply a stack of Wither to targets affected by Unstable Affliction while the effect is active. This means that during the duration of Malevolence, all your active Withers will be dealing their bonus Acute damage, providing a damage boost, resource generation, and a Haste increase all in one effect. The ability mentions "Targets" (plural) affected by Unstable Affliction, likely due to Rampant Afflictions being applicable in PvP.

The short cooldown of Malevolence adds complexity to its management. To maximize its effectiveness, you need to ensure that the maximum number of targets have Wither applied to trigger the Acute portion of Malevolence, while also making full use of the Haste and Malefic Rapture amplifying portions. In mass AOE situations, you might not cast many Malefic Raptures, but you will have many Withers active thanks to Seed of Corruption applying the effect.

It would be beneficial to see Seed of Corruption added to Malevolence so that the Rapture portion of the cooldown does not feel out of place in AOE, though this might be too strong given the 1-minute cooldown. Nevertheless, the effect is deceptively powerful if used properly, especially with the rapid generation of Wither stacks facilitated by other abilities.

Defensive and Utility Talents

Choice node: Mark of the Legashi VS Aura of Enfeeblement

Mark of the Legashi is an intriguing option, as historically, there haven't been many situations in PvE where both Curse of Tongues and Curse of Weakness have been relevant on the same target. One notable recent exception was the Sylvanas fight, but that was due to a bug with Tongues, which was later fixed. However, in PvP, this talent could have various strategic uses, proving effective against certain roles in different scenarios.

Aura of Enfeeblement, on the other hand, is much more intriguing. The primary question is how the spell functions: whether it creates an aura around your character or around the mob you cast Tongues or Weakness on. We would guess it is based around any mob with either curse applied, but the tooltip's wording could imply it is an aura around the player.

If it is an aura around the player, you would likely need to stay within 10 yards of most mobs in an M+/AOE setting to apply Weakness and Tongues to the pack. This configuration could be stronger in certain PvP scenarios but weaker in others. Regardless of its specific mechanics, Aura of Enfeeblement seems to be one of the strongest quality of life and utility traits we have seen so far.

Choice node: Zevrim's Resilience VS Illhoof's Design

Both Zevrim's Resilience and Illhoof's Design offer intriguing potential, though they fall somewhat short of expectations. The 10% Soul Leech benefit from Zevrim's Resilience after consuming a Healthstone is a pleasant perk, yet it often feels inadequate. Typically, you use a Healthstone to compensate for health already depleted by recent attacks, rendering the 10% Soul Leech shield less impactful in those scenarios. However, in PvP battles or against enemies with consistent periodic damage, the Soul Leech shield can be more advantageous. Although the ability isn't particularly dazzling or potent, it does provide modest damage mitigation. The primary drawback is its reliance on Healthstone consumption.

Conversely, Illhoof's Design demands a sacrifice of 10% of your health but compensates by allowing you to accumulate an additional 15% Soul Leech beyond your current capability. This might seem like a favorable trade-off, but due to recent nerfs in Dragonflight, reaching the full 10% Soul Leech shield has become quite challenging. It's also crucial to note that this is a passive effect rather than an active ability like Dark Pact.

Overall Conclusion

The Hellcaller talent tree looks promising and has a lot of hidden potential in different situations. However, many questions remain unanswered until we can fully test it during the Alpha/Beta phase. The 1-minute cooldown on Malevolence is particularly important and will reward players who time the ability well and manage Wither stacks effectively. It would be better if Mark of Xavius simply reduced the cooldown on Vile Taint, instead of allowing an odd refresh of dots, but it might feel better during actual gameplay than it seems on paper. The Aura of Enfeeblement is also a huge quality-of-life improvement and will be very valuable in Mythic+ and other relevant situations.

A lot of Hellcaller's potential depends on the Affliction talent tree and whether changes are made to problematic areas like Siphon Life and the choice between single-target or AOE damage profiles. Without yet seeing the full tree, Hellcaller can be rated a 7.5 out of 10 in terms of Affliction, with the potential to score higher or lower when alpha testing begins.
